Clean Up Day Saturday December 6, 2009

The Lincoln Cemetery office, which is located 2275 Simpson Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30314, phone number (404) 792-2220, says that Hollywood Road Cemetery is most transversable from Thanksgiving to Easter. Only in that time frame will they guide people to their family's plot.

I think that's a good rule for us to follow. So our first Hollywood Road Cemetery Clean Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th, 2009. It's early enough in the Christmas season that everyone shouldn't be crazy busy, but still warm enough so that we don't freeze!

Wear old clothes and gloves. I also like to wear rubber fishing or rainboots while I'm in Hollywood...just in case. For those of you who have been nervous about going there alone, this will be a great chance to go when lots of people will be about.

If you are planning to make this your first trip to Hollywood Cemetery, please call the office to get your family's plot information. I'll bring copies of maps.

If you don't have family at Hollywood but would like to come anyway, please do! We need people to help clear the paths.

  1. Hi Tracie, Gail Robinson here. We were the ones you met at Hollywood Cemetery. We are looking forward to cleanup day Dec. 6th. We might go sooner to work on our family plot while my husband is not teaching this Summer on Saturdays. Did you find your family? My husband Allen is ready to go and do some work. Let me know if you would want to meet us there. gailrobinson7@comcast.net We don't have a definite date yet.

  2. Hi, Tracie, Jean Jones here. When I contacted the people at Lincoln cemetery to find the location of my husbands grandparents, who are buried at Hollywood, I was given the plat and lot number, but was told that there were no maps so I could find the location. Are there any maps?

  3. That is a good question! I'm going to meet with Lincoln either late this week or early next, and hopefully I'll have some real, concrete answers.

  4. Hi, Jean Jones again. When I talked to the people at Lincoln, they gave me the Plat and lot numbers, where my husbands grandmother is buried. They said they didn't a plat (map) and the only way they could find it was to send their people and search. I think they said they charged about $50.00 an hour. That seems a little strange to me. What if someone owned a lot there and needed to be buried, how would they find the lot? When I talked to them, it was in 2007.

  5. Hi Tracie, I found this site by searching for Hollywood Cemetery. My great grandparents and a great aunt are buried there. I would be interested in assisting with the clean-up. Can you provide more info?

    Thank you

  9. Sorry I did not see this posting in time for the clean-up day, but we also had a death/funeral in the family that day. Was anyone ever able to get a map of the plots at Hollywood? If so, could someone please let me know: condougls@comcast.net. I received a grave record last year from the people at Lincoln for my great-grandfather, great-aunt's graves. Linda

  11. Hi, folks. Ed and Rene Beck, who live in Florida and have family at Hollywood Cemetery sent me this link. I've photographed and blogged on Hollywood Cemetery before. I'm mostly involved in the Sylvester Cemetery foundation, so my hands-on work goes there, but I'm interested in being posted on what y'all are doing. My blog entry on Hollywood Cemetery is at http://larryfeltonjohnson.typepad.com/atlantalarry/2007/01/atlantas_hollyw.html

  12. Hi Tracie,

My cousin and I will be visiting Hollywood Cemetery in a couple of weeks to locate and visit our uncle, John Henry Simmons who died October the 17th, 1940. First call to Lincoln was not the most positive, however, they don't seem to like amateur genealogist. Do they have maps there? Are the stories about the plethora of snakes true? If not, do you know where we can find them. Any advise anyone can give me about locating someone in the cemetery would be appreciated. Thanks!

  13. Hi, Aussie,
Jean Jones here. Tracie hasn't posted since Aug. 2009. Don't know why. If the people at Lincoln have maps of Hollywood, they aren't sharing. I have tried, but didn't get anywhere. This is a bad time of year to go. The old part of the cemetery (where my husbands grandparents are buried) is VERY overgrown, with brush and trees. It is really a shame. Hope you find your uncles grave. Let me know how you make out.

  14. Hi, Jean. Thanks for the information. We showed up at Lincoln Tuesday morning. We plead for information and here it is Thursday morning and still no information. The "person" in charge of the information was very unhelpful. He acknowledge there was a map, but if we were not Eagle Scouts, it would not be of help. When I informed him that I am a former Marine, he said, "Well that is almost as good". He then refused to let us see the map. We even told them we were in town specifically to do research and had limited time. Conversely, at Crestlawn Cemetery in Atlanta, they were extremely helpful. They gave us copies of the cemetery cards, gave us a map, escorted us to the graves, and then gave us a guided tour of the rest of the historical cemetery! They were also out taking photographs of tombstones to send to people who had requested them! Well we won't make it back for another year, maybe we will try again.

  15. The man at Lincoln is a total JERK.
I paid for a copy 8x10 of where he said my ggg grandfather was buried. I went to the cemetery and spent hours in the rain thru all weeds and briars and found nothing. I went back to Lincoln and told him flat out that it was the wrong map. He had sent me to the wrong location so he made a copy of the right location and I finally found the grave after 6 hours or looking. I don't know why that map is so secretive. If I could get my hands on it I would make a copy and post it. This guy should be working as an exterminator. He has no personality at all. Good luck to anyone that is headed to Hollywood Cemetery and does not know where their relative is located.

Hello, My family members are buried in the crypt. In March of this year robbers stole the bronze markers off most of the crypts. There is an investigation by Atlanta Police Department.
Email me if you have questions or can help please.

  19. My Grandparents, maternal aunt, brother, and at least one cousin are all buried at Hollywood. We have been unable to locate anything on where they are located. My sister did some investigating and thinks they have sold the property and a road is going over the graves. It makes me so sad, I remember as a child going there and mowing the grass. At some point the family stopped going because it wasn't safe. If anyone finds any info on Arthur Curtis, Margaret Curtis, Allen Derrick Gentry, or the last name Crowe. I would appreciate any info.

  21. Hello everyone:
I see that many of you are very interested in Hollywood Cemetery, and have had the same type of bad experiences that I've had.

I'm working on photographing and documenting all the graves at the cemetery, and I'm putting the data on this Website:

    http://stephensroots.com/HollywoodCemeteryHome.htm

Please take a look at it and let me know if you have questions or suggestions. There are several pages about Hollywood Cemetery, as well as lots of photos. I'm adding more all the time. My email address is listed on the site.

    Best wishes.
    James

  22. It's terrible that I've been that inattentive, but I just now noticed this blog. I hope you resume updating it again. Hollywood Cemetery could be a really beautiful cemetery if it were cleaned up. As far as I know it's the only large hilly cemetery in metro Atlanta.

I was speaking with my Dad and asking about his Grandfather and he said he was buried here but because of the location and condition of the cemetery he and my Aunt were afraid to go back. I am interested in helping to clean up the area and locating where my Great Grandfather is buried. Dad said he also has two baby siblings buried there too.
